Project Description
The New Climate Divide (ClimateDivide) is a research group led by Endre Borbáth at Heidelberg University and funded through the German Research Foundation’s Emmy Noether Programme. The project investigates how climate change is moving from a largely consensual valence issue towards a polarising political divide, with consequences for mobilisation, political participation and collective identities in Europe.
It focuses on distributive conflicts and on the relationship between a right-wing camp opposing climate reforms and an increasingly mainstream yet fragmented green camp. The project examines party competition and civil society in France, Germany, Sweden, Italy, Spain, Hungary and Romania over the period 2010–2030. It combines computational media analysis with surveys, survey experiments and qualitative focus groups.
