Political Science Academics

Politics, i.e. the ‘striving for a share of power or for influence over the distribution of power’ (Max Weber) and the binding regulation of social conflicts over coveted values and goods, permeates all societies at all times.

Developments and events such as the debate on the ‘refugee crisis’, the ‘fight against terrorism’ and the ‘Islamic State’, the ‘euro crisis’, the ongoing task of reforming social systems, global ‘mega challenges’ such as climate change, and transnational waves of protest such as the "Arab Spring. Political science analyses these and many other topics in a systematic way. It thus contributes to a deeper understanding of today's world and its problems, deals with fundamental and detailed questions of political order, and can also support politicians in their search for solutions.

Doctorate

Admission to doctoral studies is granted by the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences. The prerequisite for this is a commitment to supervise by a professor at the faculty (‘doctoral supervisor’). Confirmation of supervision does not automatically imply confirmation of funding. A doctoral agreement is concluded for the supervisory relationship. You can then apply for acceptance as a doctoral candidate at the faculty. An optional step is to enrol as a doctoral candidate at Heidelberg University.
