Research Profile

Endre Borbáth is Junior Professor for Empirical-Analytical Participation Research at Heidelberg University’s Institute of Political Science and leads the Emmy Noether research group The New Climate Divide. He is also a guest researcher at the Center for Civil Society Research at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center.

His work examines mass mobilisation and changing political cleavages in Europe, with particular attention to climate change, immigration and European integration. Combining comparative politics with political sociology, he studies how parties and social movements mobilise and how citizens participate and develop political group identities.

He primarily uses quantitative approaches, including analyses of media reporting on election campaigns and protests, population surveys and survey experiments. His geographical focus is Western, Central and Eastern Europe.

The New Climate Divide

The New Climate Divide (ClimateDivide) is a research group led by Endre Borbáth at Heidelberg University and funded through the German Research Foundation’s Emmy Noether Programme. The project investigates how climate change is moving from a largely consensual valence issue towards a polarising political divide, with consequences for mobilisation, political participation and collective identities in Europe.
